Graduate Student – Summer Plans

Allegra, Jacqueline – MDP program and Certificate in African Studies – Field Practicum: Environmental Health in the Artic- a documentary film, Anchorage, Alaska

Borden, Jesse – 1st year MSc student (SNRE) and FLAS Fellow through CAS – conducting research in forest canopies around Gainesville from May-June. In June, he will be surveying a forest’s canopy in a small tropical dry forest in Madagascar for the presence of reptiles and amphibians.

Casimir, Jessica – PhD student in Sociology – conducting fieldwork in Durban, South Africa from June to August.

Dunnavant, Justin – 7th year PhD student in Archology (Dept of Anthropology) – will graduate this summer and begin postdoctoral research in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. In Fall 2017, Justin will serve as a U. of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at U. of Santa Cruz, followed by a 2-year appoint at Vanderbilt University as an Academic Pathways Postdoctoral Fellow (Fall 2018 – Spring 2020).

Gelber, Max J. – 1st year MDP program – conducting MDP field practicum project on the shark fishery in Takoradi, Shama, and other areas in Western Region, Ghana, from mid-May to early August.

Gonzalez, Cady – MA/PhD student in Anthropology – conducting research in Addis Ababa, Ethiopiafrom May 30th to July 4th; otherwise, in Gainesville working on grant proposals and writing up research.

Gorham, Victoria – 5th year PhD student in Political Science – conducting fieldwork in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania beginning in June.

Hames, John – 8th year PhD student in Anthropology – defended dissertation on April 3rd, 2017.

Harris-Coble, Lacey – graduating from MDP program – Final Report, “Income diversification and seasonality for smallholder farmers in Kilosa, Tanzania.”

Jones, Corey – MDP program – Field Practicum: Post-conflict Reconstruction in Ludwindja, Eastern DRC.

Kihombo, Grace – MDP program – Field Practicum: Assessment of factors contribution to academic performance among girls in Form Four national examinations, Mbeya, Tanzania.

Lake, Eric – PhD student in Political Science – taking French and Wolof at AFLI in Gainesville this summer.

Lowe, Benjamin – 1st year MS student (SNRE) – conducting fieldwork in Kigoma Tanzania, on Lake Tanganyika fisheries.

McLaren, Ciara Ainsley – 2nd year MA student in Political Science – studying intermediate Swahili at AFLI in Gainesville this summer.

McOmber, Chesney – PhD student in Political Science – finishing the last chapter of her dissertation in Gainesville this summer, in hopes of graduating in Fall 2017.

Mohammed, Mustapha – 2nd year PhD student in Anthropology – will likely teach Akan/Twi for AFLI this summer while also completing proposals for grant applications.

Mtsetfwa, Fezile – 2nd year PhD (SNRE) and Wildlife Ecology Dept. – awarded a CAS pre-dissertation grant to conduct fieldwork in Swaziland beginning in July.

Nelson, July – graduating from MDP program – Final Report, “Designing and Conducting a Needs Assessment for Shanti Uganda’s Garden Program.” July’s next step is enrolling in the PhD program in Agricultural Extension and Communication at UF.

Nyokabi Maingi, Sheila – MDP program – Field Practicum: M&E to strengthen entrepreneurship programs countering gender-based violence, Gauteng Province, South Africa.

Rodriquez, Estefania – MDP program – Field Practicum: Evaluating the potential to commercialize goal production in Mbabane, Swaziland.

Seago, Jessie-Leigh – 4th year PhD student in Political Science – defending her prospectus on June 1st, attending Fulbright orientation in DC June 18-20, and prepping for Fulbright research in Nambia to begin about September.

Velez, Rachel – graduating from MDP program – Final Report, “Fostering the Capacity of Kibera’s Care Groups to Promote WASH Behaviors Among Pregnant and Lactating Women.”

Ward, Sarah – graduating from MDP program – Final Report, “Safe Spaces for Reproductive Health, Girls’ Rights, and Leadership Education: A Case Study in Kibera, Kenya.”

Yohe, Nicole – MDP program – Field Practicum: Monitoring and evaluation of entrepreneurship programs among refugees in Kampala, Uganda.

Zungu, Zotha – MDP program – Field Practicum: Assessing the impact of the Old Mutual Education Flagship Project and implementing an evaluation tool (tracker) in 18 schools, King Williams Town, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
