Ms. Harris (GHS) Awarded Teacher of the Year

Ms. Nicole Harris was awarded the Teacher of the Year at Gainesville High School. She is an alumna of the Teacher’s Summer Institute hosted by the Center for African Studies. She is the curator, organizer, and program manager of the first African Diaspora History Fair at Gainesville High School held in February 2020.

Nicole A. Harris has taught for eight years. During her career, she has taught four levels of English and honors African/African American History in a class she calls, Africa and Its Diaspora, which explores the presence and contributions of African peoples all over the world.  She teaches an English course to seniors who are non-traditional Cambridge students. Though many had not taken a college course before, they earned a 77% and 82% passing rate in the first two years, resulting in the district winning the Cambridge District of the Year Award for expanding course offerings successfully. Similarly, her honors Africa and Its Diaspora class makes its way back to campus after not being offered in well over a decade.
