In the United States we often hear about the overuse and abuse of opioids, not their absence but a parallel challenge, long in the making, has been unfolding in sub-Saharan Africa. There is a severe lack of narcotics for use in pain management in medical settings and sub-Saharan Africa was the only world region in which consumption of opioid analgesics declined between 2001 and 2013. Join us as we discuss a new project that will explore access to opioids in Tanzania and Uganda, while connecting opioid scarcity to global policy via the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
