The Center for African Studies is offering awards to support UF student study for research in Africa on African cultures during Summer 2026.

These awards are supported by the Robin Poynor Student Travel Fund, established to honor UF Emeritus Professor Robin Poynor’s lifetime of achievements in the field of African cultural research.

Who Can Apply?

  • University of Florida students (both graduate and undergraduate)
  • US citizens and international students
  • Students from any program at UF
  • Students whose research or study in Africa focuses on African cultures

Awards will be for a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $1,500

Funds may be used for travel to/from and accommodation and living expenses occurred in Africa for the purposes of research or study of African cultures during the Summer of 2026, up to and including August 14th, 2026.

Post-Award Requirements

  • All expenses must be receipted and reported to CAS by September 30th
  • Recipients will also submit a short (3-5 minute) video about their project, following CAS video guidelines, for use on the CAS website and social media to publicize the Poynor Fund and student research.

 

Applicants must submit the completed application form by March 2nd. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by March 16th.
