The Center for African Studies and Languages, Literatures, and Cultures hosted an information session connecting students with representatives from the Boren Awards program and UF’s Prestigious Awards office to explore opportunities for funded African language study abroad and career pathways in federal service.

Akinyemi Akintunde, representing UF’s African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI), highlighted the program’s immersive approach to language learning. Through eight weeks of intensive instruction, small classes, and cultural activities, students can complete the equivalent of an academic year’s language coursework before continuing their studies abroad. Activities such as Africa Eats, host-family visits, and group excursions help students build cultural understanding and connections beyond the classroom.
Baleigh Preston, a representative from the Boren Awards program, outlined funding opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing critical language study abroad. Through Boren, eligible AFLI participants can receive $25,000 in funding, with an additional $12,500 available for an approved spring extension. The presentation also explored how African language proficiency connects to careers in diplomacy, public health, national security, and federal government service. Students received guidance on eligibility requirements, application essays, and articulating their academic and professional goals.
Hannah Clark, UF Prestigious Awards Advisor, concluded the session by introducing the university’s resources for students pursuing nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships. She emphasized the value of applying for prestigious awards, including opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and career advancement. Clark also outlined UF’s optional Boren campus endorsement process, which provides applicants with faculty evaluations, individualized feedback, and additional institutional support.
African language education can open doors to international experiences, professional networks, and careers in public service. Students were encouraged to explore these opportunities early and take advantage of the advising and application resources available at UF.
