ASX Home Away from Home Event Celebrates Culture, Scholarship, and Community

The recent African Student Experience (ASx) Home Away from Home event proved to be a vibrant celebration of culture, academic excellence, and community spirit. The gathering brought together students, faculty, and guests for an evening filled with engaging activities, delicious cuisine, and recognition of outstanding graduate research.

A key highlight was the Lens on Africa Graduate Research Video Competition, where Dr. Miles Larmer, Director of the Center for African Studies, announced the winners. Kenneth Oduor claimed 1st place for his work on sustainable cactus management in Kenya. Kaylin Kleckner took 2nd place for her research on wild honey bees in South Africa, and Naa Akle Okantey earned 3rd place with her study of the Nnwonkoro art form. Joshua Benjamin and Melody Bloch received honorable mentions.

Distinguished faculty members, including Dr. Agness Leslie and Dr. Brian Child, joined in the celebration. Guests enjoyed African dishes like Samosas, Thieb, and Chicken Yassa and participated in a fun trivia about the continent of Africa, with prizes awarded to winners. Interactive stations encouraged attendees to share their travel experiences and aspirations, further fostering connections within the community.

The ongoing success of events like Home Away from Home is made possible by the unwavering support of Dr. Miles Larmer and several graduate student volunteers: Naa Akle Okantey, Benedicta Opoku-Mensah, Jennifer Quartey, Damian Oakes, Asas, Mwansa Mwape, Sylvia Adisa, Rosemary Maro, and Fatimah Akinola. ASx events ensure the Center remains a hub for cultural and academic exchange, strengthening the university’s commitment to diversity and creating a welcoming environment for all.
