On a lively Saturday afternoon at Flavet Field, the Center for African Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies, and the Center for European Studies joined forces for a spirited Inter-Center Football Tournament: Kick It for the Culture. Despite the heightened campus energy from UF’s Orange and Blue spring football game, students, faculty, and families showed up in action, making the event a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and connection.

The tournament featured three teams, including two representing African Studies (CAS-1 and CAS-2), and a joint LAS/CES team blending Latin American and European Studies participants. Matches were played 11-a-side in a bracket-style competition, ultimately leading to CAS-2 claiming the victory after an afternoon of friendly competition.
Beyond the goals and passes, Kick It for the Culture offered a space for conversation, laughter, and networking. Faculty and staff members such as Dr. Phil Janzen, Dr. Agnes Leslie, Dr. Alioune Sow, Dr. Mariano German Coley from Latin American Studies, and Corinne Tomasi from the Center for European Studies were in attendance, showing support and joining in the fun. The presence of faculty alongside students created a warm, collegial atmosphere where shared interests, whether in football or African diaspora studies sparked meaningful dialogue.
Kids kicked around soccer balls on the sidelines while parents chatted under the shade. Students mingled between matches, discussing everything from game highlights to personal research projects and academic opportunities. New friendships were formed, ideas exchanged, and connections made across disciplines and centers.
The day stood out not only for its athletic excitement but also for the dynamic sense of community it fostered reminding everyone that culture is something we build, celebrate, and kick forward, together.
