This webinar focused on the importance of learning African languages for career opportunities and engaging with African populations, with participants sharing their experiences and plans related to language learning and experiential learning. The discussion also covered various study abroad programs, scholarships, and career opportunities available for students interested in African languages and cultures. The conversation ended with the introduction to next Summer AFLI (African Flagship Language Initiative) program held at UF.

Katelyn Mensah is an international exchange professional based in the DMV area. A graduate of Howard University, she has a passion for language learning and cultural exchange. Katelyn currently speaks 5 languages including Kiswahili and Twi and is hoping to add a sixth.
Shelby Mohrs is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Anthropology. She received her B.A. in Anthropology & German at Stony Brook University and has been conducting archaeological research in eastern Africa since 2017. Her dissertation focuses on Zanzibari cuisine and identity during the medieval period as understood through ancient plant remains, oral histories, and interviews with local Zanzibaris at four archaeological sites. She has been learning Kiswahili with Dr. Mwangi at Northwestern University since 2021 and participated in the US State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship Program for Kiswahili.
