Information for Boren Funded Participants
AFLI summer domestic program exposes learners to the culture and traditions of the following languages: Akan/Twi, French, Swahili, Wolof, and Zulu both inside and outside the classroom settings. Instruction is performance-based and communicative-oriented provided by professional, native-speaking instructors. Classes will meet in-person for four hours Monday through Friday plus a mandatory 1.5-hour conversational session on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays over eight weeks. Also, students will meet with a host family for two Saturdays in order to enhance communicative interactions and cultural understanding in the target languages. Students will earn course credits equivalent to the University of Florida’s one academic year of instruction (i.e., Beginning courses = 10 credits & Intermediate/Advanced courses = 6 credits).
The program is designed to enable learners to reach functional proficiency in two or more skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in their language of choice. The program will prepare Boren Scholars and Fellows for the African Flagship Languages Initiative Overseas Fall in Ghana, Tanzania, Senegal, or South Africa.
