The Center plays a pivotal role in addressing issues critical for understanding Africa in the global context. Students at the undergraduate and graduate level have a multitude of course options, concentrations and resources available through the Center to enrich their academic experience.
The Center has one of the top programs in the US for studying African languages. Seven languages representing all regions and major language families of Africa.

The Outreach Program includes a variety of activities whose objective is to improve the teaching of Africa in schools at the K-12, college, and university level, and also to the community.
Each summer, the Center hosts a K-12 Teachers Institute. The objective of the institute is to help teachers increase their knowledge about Africa and develop lesson plans to use in their classrooms.

The Center publishes an annual compilation of all Faculty, Student and Collaborative Project Reports. As well as sponsors a variety of collaborative interdisciplinary working groups. These thematic-oriented groups provide a forum for faculty and graduate students to pursue research and funding initiatives.
