How will my language proficiency be measured prior to the start of the program?

The program will conduct placement test in-person after the orientation for all students in the intermediate and advanced levels. Students in the beginning section will not be tested.

What textbooks will I be using during the program?

Summer

Boren and FLAS students: Textbooks will be supplied to you at the program orientation.

All other participants: You will need to purchase the books required for your classes. Language learning textbooks can always be used in the future as reference materials. The textbooks are only available for purchase on Amazon.com or at the University Book Store. You should buy your textbooks before first day of summer program. Fall Overseas

Boren students will be given selected learning and reading materials wile in-country.

 

How many credits will I receive at the end of the program?

Summer

Beginning: 10 credits

Intermediate or Advanced: 6 credits

Fall

Boren students: 15 credits

 

What happens at summer orientation at the University of Florida?

The orientation in Gainesville, Florida, is a one-day session. During the session, all aspects of the domestic program are discussed: the academic program, life as a student in Gainesville, getting around the city of Gainesville, health and safety issues and other issues.

 

What happens at pre-departure orientation at the University of Florida?

To assist you in the preparation for your trip overseas for the fall overseas program, we will conduct a 2-day in-person Pre-departure Orientation for you in July. Facilitators will include Boren advisor, instructors, Academic Coordinator, Resident Director, Program Directors, and Health, safety and security experts. Topics to be covered are Boren program overseas policies, Health, safely, and security while overseas, Breakout session on the nuts and bolts of living in Tanzania, Registration with the Study Abroad Office at the University of Florida, Overview of fall semester academic program, and One-on-one meeting with Boren advisor, fall overseas program resident director and academic coordinator.

 

Will I incur any fines for paying my tuition late?

If you have not received your Boren Award or FLAS Fellowship, you will not receive late fees or other fines for not paying your tuition in time. Please send us email to let us know there is a delay in the funding disbursement.

 

Are there vaccination requirements to participate in the summer program?

Yes, you are required by the University of Florida to submit your vaccinations record to participate in the summer program. This will be communicated to you in an email.

 

Do I have to purchase health insurance at the University of Florida during the domestic program?

You can use your current health insurance, but you are required to show proof of that. If you have no health insurance, you will be required to purchase one to participate in the program.

 

How can I get my academic transcript?

Student may request transcript from Office of the University Registrar: https://registrar.ufl.edu/services/transcripts

 

Is there parking available on campus during summer?

Yes. However, parking on campus is extremely limited. AFLI does not recommend driving to campus every day. If this is your only option for transportation, you will be required to purchase a parking permit at $5 per day.

 

Where are classes held on campus?

Classes can be assigned in a variety of different buildings on the University of Florida main campus, but we attempt to keep them as centralized as possible. The AFLI office is located in the Grinter Hall building, and all classes are usually within 10-15 minutes walking distance from the office.
