Information for Self-funded or FLAS-funded Participants
AFLI summer domestic program exposes learners to the culture and traditions of a number of less commonly taught African languages both inside and outside the classroom settings. Instruction is performance-based and communicative-oriented provided by professional, native-speaking instructors. Classes will meet in-person for four hours Monday through Friday plus a mandatory 1.5-hour conversational session on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays over eight weeks. Also, students will meet with a host family for two Saturdays in order to enhance communicative interactions and cultural understanding in the target languages. The program is designed to enable learners to reach functional proficiency in two or more skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in their language of choice. Students will earn course credits equivalent to the University of Florida’s one academic year of instruction (i.e., Beginning courses = 10 credits & Intermediate/Advanced courses = 6 credits).

Housing Opportunities in Gainesville during the summer program:
The University of Florida is a comprehensive public research university encompassing virtually all academic and professional disciplines, and member of the Association of American Universities. Its beautiful 2,000-acre campus is located within the city of Gainesville, a diverse community of over 120,000 people. June and July are months when Gainesville moves from sub-tropical to tropical, with daytime highs regularly 88-94F (31-34C) and continuously high levels of humidity. Overnight lows are typically 72-77F (22-25C) and no change in humidity. Late afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common as the Florida sunshine heats up moist summer air. Unless you are well-adjusted to such climates, air-conditioned living space is recommended and most apartments, condos, and houses are equipped with central systems. All UF classrooms and administrative buildings are air-conditioned.
Resources for renting in Gainesville:
Non-Boren students can also apply to stay in Cypress Hall. Any student who is interested in doing so should get in touch with us latest by the end of April. For students who will like off-campus accommodation, summer subleases abound in Gainesville like many university towns, and it is a buyer’s market for housing.
