Cholera in DRC: Epidemiology, Ecology and Anthropology

In this presentation, we will provide the epidemiology, ecology and anthropologic aspects of the disease in Goma, DRC. We will also discuss the cholera mitigation processes, including purification of household water with chlorine tablets, WASH (Water, sanitation, and hygiene), ORS (oral rehydration of saline) and cholera vaccine. We also will discuss the importance of educating population on the disease in community settings to mitigate and/or potential elimination of the disease burden.

Afsar Ali is a research Associate Professor in the department of Environmental and Global Health, College of Public Health and Health Professions and Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI). He has more than 22 years of experience on cholera work with particular emphasis of cholera epidemiology, ecology and pathogen evolution with disease transmission. He has worked on cholera projects in Bangladesh, Haiti and now in Goma, DRC.

Dr. Felicien is an anthropologist by training and currently serving as a project manager of a NIH-sponsored cholera study (in progress) in Goma, DRC.
