The Paradox of the Two Ummas: the Predicament of the Algerian Ulama between Tradition and Modernity.
This talk will draw on the specific case of the current reform of Islamic schooling in Algeria to examine the implications of the political ambivalence of the notion of transnational Muslim community (umma) in the nation-state era. The presentation will particularly focus on the scholarly elites and the way their agency can illuminate our understanding of the tensions shaped on a broader scale by the relationship between modernity, Islam, and the state when projected through the lens of the Muslim community. This presentation will examine how Algerian ‘ulama engage this notion of umma in their religious and educational missions and, in so doing, project and accommodate their understanding of the community based on imaginaries and lived experiences, and in dialogue with the secular nation state, often considered as the “other umma.”
