Megan Cogburn, UF. Forgeries, firings, and indicator-drive care: questions and reflections from a working dissertation chapter. December 7 | 12:50pm EST

This talk introduces some of my questions and reflections on what counts as care by focusing on the suspicions and accusations surrounding health card forgeries and the firing of two community health workers during my ethnographic field work in rural Tanzania in 2019. The chapter asks, how does the forgery come into being? What is the relationship between forgeries and care? What does the object of the forged health card say about the temporalities of care and governance? Has the indicator-driven era of global health given birth to new types of forgeries? Is indicator-driven care itself a kind of forgery?
