UF Islam in Africa Working Group (IAWG)

April 14, 2023 @ 3:30 pm - April 15, 2023 @ 2:30 pm

The symposium will bring together scholars working on different regions of Africa and will explore the historical and contemporary formation of new Muslim actors, while also considering the impact of globalization as well as these actors’ relationships with the local political and religious institutions.

The symposium will take place at Grinter Hall (Room 404) and will start on Friday April 14 from 3:30 pm to 5 pm with a keynote address, Muslim Women’s Interpretive Authority Reconsidered: Everyday Interpretation among Female Islamic Leaders in Senegal, by Dr. Joseph Hill, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Alberta in Canada. The program will resume on April 15 from 8:45 am to 1:15 pm.

We will have lunch and an informal discussion at the end of the last session, from 1:15 pm to 2 pm. We are able to provide lunches for UF participants who plan to attend the event and register in advance.  To register for lunch, please reach out to Zhu Tang via email (tangz@ufl.edu) to request the link to order your food by April 14.
