Lens on Africa: Graduate Research Video Competition

This competition aims to engage graduate students involved in research focused on Africa or African-related themes. Whether your studies will take place this summer or occurred within the last year, we invite you to showcase your research in a visually exciting 3–5-minute video. This contest offers a platform to highlight the significance and innovative aspects of your work. Winners will receive support for research-related travel or conference participation, furthering their academic and professional goals.

Prizes:
1st Place: $500
2nd Place: $250
3rd Place: $125

Prize money must be used for research-related travel in Africa or participation in an Africa-related conference presentation by June 15, 2025, at the latest.

Eligibility and Submission Requirements:

  • Participants: Open to all UF graduate students.
  • Research Focus: Must be related to Africa, conducted in Africa or on an African-related research topic.
  • Video Length: Videos must be at least 3 minutes in length and may not exceed 5 minutes, HD quality (minimum 720p and 1280×720 pixels (Landscape orientation). MP4 file format.

Submission Instructions:

Upload your video and entry details using the provided online submission form. Ensure all video content is from research conducted within the last year or this coming Summer 2024.

No copyrighted materials (music, images, video clips, etc.) may be used for this contest unless you own the copyright or have a license to use the material for this contest. Written permission must be obtained and provided upon request for all copyrighted materials.

  1. The video is 3-to-5-minutes in length.
  2. Get a Video Download Link*.
  3. Complete the application.

*To submit your video for consideration, you must provide a Video download link where it can be downloaded by the contest administrator. We recommend WeTransfer, a free website and app (instructions below) which saves your link for seven days. Please expand the appropriate “+” symbol to see the WeTransfer instructions, and use them to secure your Video download link prior to completing the Contest Submission Form. Please upload your video and complete the form on the same day to allow us maximum time to download your video.

Go to https://wetransfer.com/. If you are prompted to create an account, click the “Just upload files” link below the account information. Then agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy acknowledgement.

Click “Upload Files”, and navigate to your file to upload it.

Click the “Next” button.

Select the “Get Transfer Link” radio selection, then click the “Get Link” button.

Wait a few moments for your file to upload.

Click the “Copy Link” button.

Desktop WeTransfer Instructions

Go to https://wetransfer.com/. If you are prompted to create an account, click the “Just upload files” link below the account information. Then see the upload module in the lefthand side of the screen.


Agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy acknowledgement.

If you see a dialog bubble offering to create a free account, click “Not Now”.

Click “Upload Files”, and navigate to your file to upload it.

Click the three vertical dots next to the “Transfer” button.

Select the “Get Transfer Link” radio button, then click the “Get Link” button.

Wait a few moments for your file to upload.

Click the “Copy Link” button.

Video will be judged according to the following criteria:

  1. What is the core objective of your research?
    Describe the main question or problem your research is addressing. Explain why this topic is significant, particularly in the context of Africa or African-related themes.
  2. What are the discoveries or findings of your study?
    Highlight unique methods used, or new insights your research has contributed to the field. Detail how these elements advance understanding or solve critical issues related to your research topic.
  3. How does your research benefit or impact the community, field of study, or wider social concerns?
    Discuss the implications of your findings for local communities, policymaking, academic disciplines, or broader societal challenges. Explain how your research contributes to positive change or advances critical discussions within and beyond the African context.
  4. How have you used creative elements in your video to communicate your research? 
    The use of various camera angles and visual perspectives, the incorporation of B-roll footage, and creative editing.

Submission Deadline: August 15th, 2024

For your video entry to be considered in the Contest, you must submit the Contest Submission Form containing your Video Download Link by 11:59 pm on August 15, 2024.

When will the winners be announced?

All winners will be announced at the upcoming African Student eXperience (ASX) Home Away from Home reception event, scheduled for September. All competition entrance will be informed at the time and date of this event by end of July.
